BHP Billiton Nickel West began sponsoring activity days in 2006
which included subsidizing the cost for students when they visited the
Forest. This sponsorship has continued and has expanded to enable more students
from many different schools to experience activity days at the Forest (Table
1).

Children’s Forest 2005-2010.
In 2010, activity days began in Term 2 and due to popular demand
were also held in term 3 and term 4. During the activity days participants weeded and planted a record
4,387 native seedlings, listened to fire safety talks (Singleton Volunteer
Fire Brigade), studied fungi, soils, frogs, wetlands, Australian animals,
bats, sorted macro-invertebrates, aged and mapped tuart trees in BCF,
collected seed, created clay creatures to live in the bushland, went on a
great dinosaur dig to identify bones, listened to Aboriginal cultural stories and
explored the forest with a guide, studied insects in different habitats,
looked at the Forest under a microscope and created a sensory obstacle
course.
